"..art is an expression of interest, and that interest depends upon the sensibility which makes us alive in the real world to things that to one not sensitive would not exist," ~ Dr. Albert C. Barnes, in The Art Of Painting |
2002 Dear Members, It is upon us at the Martin S. Wilson, Jr. Center for the Arts, Inc. (Wilson Arts Center) to bring this sensitivity to children attending elementary schools in Atlantic City, to the school child at the Learning Center, to the young person who is learning puppetry at the Chelsea Boys & Girls Club and to the adult who is reaching out for an opportunity . As school boards are decreasing their financial support for the arts, we must increase our dedication to teach our children about visual and performing arts. We are asking for your help as someone interested in bringing the arts to the children of Atlantic County. The Wilson Arts Center last year employed artists at the Brighton Avenue School and the Learning Center. This year we will expand our classes to include Chelsea Heights, Uptown Complex and Indiana Schools. We are hopeful that in ensuing years we will be able to include all the Atlantic City schools. Proceeds from the Tru Black and White Masked Ball (the Ball) at Club Tru, and the Breakfast with the Artists and the Boardwalk on Saturday November 16, 2002, will be used to administer this pilot project. In furtherance of our ideal that artists should be paid for their work, at the silent auction at the Ball, each artist will set their own price and the proceeds of the item will be divided between the artist and the Wilson Arts Center. Did you hear the story about the cowboy poet who was constantly getting asked to come "perform" at schools and libraries and such, the refrain always being "We can't afford to pay you anything, but it'd be great exposure." To which the cowboy replied, "M'am, in Wyoming people DIE of exposure." This is a community effort to keep the arts audience alive in the next generation, to establish art appreciation to include all forms of visual and performing arts, to instill in young minds a love of the arts as a natural part of life. We cannot, we must not allow a generation of children to be lost to the arts. Our other outreach program under the guidance of Joyce Tilton is growing and reaching people of all ages and abilities at such places as the Atlantic County Intergenerational Services, JOAS, ARC, Providence House, Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club and AtlantiCare Hopewell MICA and PACT Unit.
